Kashi

  • Kashi or Varanasi as it is called today has been a seat of Hindu learning through the ages. It is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world with a history of over 5,000 years.
  • There are innumerable schools and countless Brahmin pandits (learned scholars) in Kashi , who are responsible for the continuation of traditional learning of the Vedic scriptures through the ancient Gurukulam method of education.
  • The city has long been an educational and musical hub where many prominent Indian philosophers, poets, writers, and musicians live or have lived through the ages.
  • India’s oldest Sanskrit college, the Banaras Sanskrit College now called the Sampurnanand University was founded there in 1791,The Banaras Hindu University in 1916 and the Kashi Vidyapeeth in 1921.
  • Author Mark Twain once wrote in 1897 of Varanasi, “Benares is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend, and looks twice as old as all of them put together.”

The importance of the Gurukul system in present times

  • The main focus of Gurukuls was on imparting learning in a natural surrounding where the shishyas lived with each other in brotherhood, humanity, love, and discipline. The essential teachings were in subjects like language, science, mathematics through group discussions, self-learning etc. Not only this, but the focus was also given on arts, sports, crafts as well as singing which developed their intelligence and critical thinking. Activities such as yoga, meditation, mantra chanting etc generated positivity and peace of mind and made them exceptional individuals. It was also mandatory to do daily chores with the intention of imparting practical skills.
  • All these helped in personality development and increased confidence, sense of discipline, intellect and mindfulness which is necessary even today to face the world.
  • Overall, the idea of inculcating a Gurukul system in Indian education is to assist the children in understanding the concept of a balanced life and holistic education. This very ideology of balance should be taught to young children from an early age so that they can make informed decisions about work, food, exercise and the way they wish to conduct their lives.
  • The Gurukul system focussed on applied knowledge that prepared the students in all fields of life. In present times it can be done by creating a perfect combination of academics and extracurricular activities along with Yoga and spiritual awareness.
  • Gurukul Global School is committed to empowering every student to achieve academic excellence and sincerely working on their holistic development. The school strives for effective mentorship so that the students learn and grow in a conducive learning environment.
  • The vision of KT Gurukulam is to groom global citizens who are responsible, woke and committed to what matters the most for physical and mental well-being of people across the globe. The aim is always: Tamso Ma jyotirgamaya “Leading from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge”.

KT Gurukulam

  • The Gurukul System: The ‘Gurukul’ is the epitome of the education system practised in ancient India.
  • The term is derived from “Guru” meaning teacher and “Kula” meaning clan or family that students joined at a specific stage depending on the background they belonged to.
  • It was a residential schooling system whose origin dates back to around 5000 BC in the Indian subcontinent. It was more prevalent during the Vedic age where students were taught various subjects and how to live a cultured and disciplined life. A Gurukul was actually the home of the teacher or Acharya and was the centre of learning where pupils resided till their education was complete. All were considered equal at the Gurukul and guru (teacher) as well as shishya (student) resided in the same house or lived near each other.
  • Students were expected to memorise lessons that were taught orally . They also had to help the guru in his day to day life, including carrying out daily household chores.
  • However, some scholars suggest that the activities were not mundane and were an essential part of the education to inculcate self-discipline and independence in them.
  • Education was not charged in terms of money and students offered their Gurus a token of gratitude either in currency or kind based on their means . This wasknown as Guru Dakshina.
